The first and titular short story "Shoko's Smile" brings a really intimate outlook into contradictory points of view of Soyo, the main character, between wanting to belong to the traditional structure of a family and wanting to be recognised as someone exceptional. Totally relatable.

This was one of my favourite short story collections of the year. Would love to discuss as you read further. I'm so sorry for not responding earlier to your thoughtful erudite comment on I'm Waiting For You, Bagus, I lost my copy of the book back to the library system & haven’t had a chance to get back to it. But the theology underpinning that middle story is fascinating.

My impression so far is that the stories involve interactions between a Korean protagonist and foreign characters (Shoko was Japanese and Thuy was Vietnamese), something that I rarely saw in Korean literature these days. The stories seem to be about handling love and loss, albeit the love that is mentioned here does not necessarily love in a romantic sense, such as the love between two families or two friends. I could already see this will become my favourite too! Would like to hear your thoughts too later about this book :)
