There has always been pro football dating back to the 1890's but the most known one (the NFL) has been around since the 1920's. By 2002, the NFL had become a 32 team league. The NFL was not the only pro football leagues, there were All-American Football Conference (1946-1949), American Football League (1960-1969), and the World Football League (1974-1975).

Tons of colleges had to quit their football programs in the 40's because of World War II. Coach Earl Blaik's team was undefeated for 3 years from 1944-1946. Coach Woodly Hayes' team had 13 Big Ten championship.

Colleges started to arrange football games in 1865 after the Civil War. The first rule book was established in 1867 and in that same, the patented football was made. The first intercollegiate football game was played between Princeton and Rutgers College on November 6, 1869.

5 yard penalties are given for minor infractions, offsides, and encroachment. 15 yard penalties are given for roughing the passer and clipping or blocking from behind.

Football in the US is played on 100 yard field and 160 feet wide. High school and college level football goal post have different dimessions than pro level football. Football players have to wear certain gear to protect them from the artificial surfaces.
