It sure helps when the narrator uses a peer voice to describe the proceedings. It makes the entire novel sound like a story one son of a gun is telling another in some dive bar in North Carolina, and therefore carries the ring of truth without any condescension at all.

The story deepens with every page and I am seduced. Who writes about these people? Who writes about them this way? Really powerful shit here.

Terrific crime yarn. I've settled in nicely with this story.

I am constantly surprised at the turns this story is taking, and the characters, rough and hard-edged as they come across, are somehow endearing themselves to me. I’m digging this with both fists.

It’s a harsh dangerous world I would never wish to be part of, but one I’m glad to know through this really sharp spare prose. So observant of an existence that seethes on the outskirts of our experience.
