Seriously great literature, another book on my long list of Classics-I-haven't-read-yet. It's long, with many digressions from the already sweeping story of hundreds of characters over decades of the 19th century, but worth the time. Hugo brings history to life in a way that textbooks can't. For the pure story, there is a wealth of detail and development that can't be fit into a musical or movie.
