The book seems to offer a chronological account of the development of the Chinese state, from the late empire to turn of the century Communist China. Themes articulated in the intro are inherited continuities, adaptation to circumstances, and eclecticism. Published in 2000 though, the text seems to underestimate the capacity of the CCP to hold on to power, further expand the economy, and legitimise its rule.
