I decided to not continue reading this one, which seldom happens. I was really enjoying it, until the point where the protagonist's misery really kicks off. I was irritated, not to mention feeling a little anxious, by the cause(s) of this misery, and as I'd read a synopsis on harrietdevine.typepad.com I knew to expect more of the same. Misunderstandings and subterfuge resulting in many years of an increasingly awful life, even if there is an eventual turnaround, does not sound like my cup of tea.
Full disclosure though: my boyfriend describes my ideal book or movie as one where nothing really bad ever happens to anyone nice, and everyone moves from one happy setting to another. He *sort of* has a point.
I am quite interested in Doris Langley Moore as a person, and will definitely check out her other books.
