Paul, is this like a Proto-Sharpe's series type of book?

I’ve not read any Sharpe books but from what I’ve seen of the tv show, these aren’t as military based. These books are mainly romances, really, but with some politics, action, mystery and humour thrown in for flavour. The combat tends to be one-on-one or happens ‘offscreen’, for the most part.
