I can see why its controversial- it's judgemental on purpose, but it does have its moments of real optimism and creativity when Achebe shows every issue he sees in his own society. It's also weirdly accessible for a book from the 70's, and I think its mostly because the discourse of post-colonial africa and corruption hasn't changed too much since.
