Odd for Daintry to invite Castle to a wedding (does it signify their different outlooks in life--Daintry is very pessimistic; Castle gives everything a positive spin). The wife's owl collection--does it foreshadow death? Castle is growing tired of the game and he sees life as a conveyor belt bringing him closer to death. If he were not worried about Sam and Sarah, he would probably long for death as an escape.

So many loose ends and unanswered questions. A bit like real life.

Part VI Chapter I - Sarah is smart. She answered the questions honestly because Maurice gave her very little information. Sam will be heartbroken about Bulley. What will happen to them if something goes wrong? I wonder if the identity of the “police inspector” was mentioned earlier. If so she is in trouble.

The book is very slow for a spy novel, but I like it. Greene is a very thoughtful writer and the book has important ideas. It wrestles with questions about loyalty and what is right. The big question is whether or not Castle will escape. This book has a pessimistic tone and, for that reason, I do not think he will succeed.

Daintry is in a no-win situation. He seems to be a man who values what is right. He works for men who basically murdered an innocent man and the one person with whom he can sympathize is probably a double agent. He has no family. He has no life.

Part V Chapter III - 3 - Very long chapter. Castle is in hurry up and wait mode. Sitting alone with his thoughts has caused him to conjure up all kinds of scenarios but he has no idea what is actually happening. Of all the characters, Daintry is the straight-arrow and tries to do the right thing. From the looks of it, it killed his marriage. Castle is loyal to his family, but he may lose his life.

Part V - Chapter II - Muller is loathesome and he may be the undoing of Castle. Even though Hargreaves shows more kindness and compassion than Muller, is he any better? His careless directions led to the death of Davis. He even ordered the death of the traitor whomever it is just so MI6 can save face. No investigation, no evidence, no trial, no jury.

Part V, Chapter I - Things are quickly unraveling. Castle is let down by everyone except Sarah. Loyalty to family is more important than any other loyalty. Because he fears for people living on the border, he is taking risks that may get him killed.

Part IV - Chapter 1 - We learn more about the characters. Daintry's dad was a chaplain and his mother was very pragmatic which explains his strong moral compass. He is in the wrong line of work for his nature. Percival is cold and calculating and his name is Emmanuel--complete opposite of his nature. Castle is getting careless and the final solution note must have something vital in it.

Part IV, Chapter I - Sarah is perceptive because of her background in the spy business. She knows there is more to the story and she figures out much of what is happening. Castle is forced to work with a man he loathes the most. He knows he is being trapped and that the conveyor belt is taking to his ultimate end. He knows when (soon) but he does not know how.
