Franks dad, Malachy, has a drinking problem, once his wife had her fourth baby, Margaret he stopped drinking and focuses all of his attention on her. The baby motivates him to become a better person and want to get a job after losing his old one. Franks mom always tries to get the kids food and the babies water with sugar. She doesn't want them to starve. She goes in debt at the Italian place trying to get them food.

His mother's motivation is her kids. She is willing to do a lot for them. Franks motivation is his brothers. He steals food from the Italian place just so they could eat bananas because they were so hungry. Him possibly getting in trouble for it did not affect him.
