This idiom says so much about how everything everyone do in the book is so related to belief and religion. It summarizes the whole story. Mainly how people were so dependant on the priest and ”the will of God.” Every signs and answers lies in religion here.
It is quite facinating since most of the people in Sweden today are atheists.
