45.My favorite part of the book...
so far, is when Isabela jumps in and saves Mr Castillo. Partly because it was awesome but also because I was not expecting that at all and I think it affected the storyline a lot because it added the challenge that they got sick from being in the water.

the authors reason for writing this book was to inform readers about the difficulties of immigration. there is so much i have learned from this book because some of the stories are set less that 10 years ago and I had no idea what they were going through.

I with the author had included why luis’s brother shot the sharks. i didn’t understand how that helped the burial be better. I think it might have been because they didn’t want the sharks to eat him but they doesn’t make sense because he only shot one shark.

I don’t understand the part where Isabela is sad that they are throwing his dead body in the ocean because i feel like that is a way for them to honor him but this makes her very very sad

I was surprised that Lito from the Isabel story was the police officer who saved Josefs dad. that is so crazy to me that the story’s a 50 years apart but they still like.

31.I was furious when...
Josef was forced to leave his father behind in Cuba. He was stuck in a mental hospital which is probably good for him but he will never get to see his family again most likely. I feel so bad for this family and I cannot wait to see what happens next.

40.It seems like...
Muhamad is not going to be able to find his little sister. He did what he had to to save her life but I feel so bad that he is taking the blame for his moms sadness. Im sure that his mom doesnt actually think it is his fault that they can't find her, he is the reason that she is alive.

39.I was surprised...
when their documents were not legal. The thought of them having to have documentation and visas didn't cross my mind but I now see that this is a very difficult thing to do and now that theirs aren't legal anymore, that will be hard for them. I think they are going to get caught when they try and sneak out of the country.

73.What do you think will happen next?
I think that everyone on the boat in the Cuba story will have a little memorial for Luis and then throw him overboard. It is very sad and unexpected that he died but now he is just extra weight on the boat that they cannot afford to keep.

when Ivan died because of the sharks. I feel like that would have been a problem that would have already happened and they would have thought of that when they got in the water but they didn't so someone died.

I love the way that Mahmoud is so selfless and sacrifices his own life so that his baby sister can be safe. This really shows how much he cares for his family and that he would do anything for them.
