After Mark’s story came Nanon’s in chapter 3. He recounts his experience and backstory in a very personal detailed manner, more so than the first two chapters. He mainly talks about what life was like in a maximum security prison, and how dehumanizing it is. In chapter 4 the author moves onto a case where the convict has already been executed, so she interviews family members, police, and lawyers instead.

In the first chapter the author introduces us to Roy who was sentenced to life in prison and put on death row after murdering a young man at the age of 17. Most of the first chapter is Roy recounting and describing his experience on death row while the author informs us of Roy’s trial and all its details. In the second chapter we follow mark’s story of avoiding death row, along with an illustration of prison life.
