Mary Roach observes a seminar of surgeons practicing on severed heads. She walks around and tries to observe but it is clear that the surgeons would prefer to work in private. She talks to one surgeon named Marilena and asks her if she was a donor as well. To Mary’s surprise, Marilena confesses that she is not because she doesn’t want to be treated with disrespect in her afterlife. Some of the other surgeons agree.

The author starts with an introduction before the actual chapters. She uses a cruise ship analogy to describe why she does what she does even though some people might find it disrespectful. She also talks about a personal story: seeing her mother’s dead body for the first time at an open casket service. After that she introduces the actual book and thanks the people who volunteered their bodies for science.
