Why do all these bargain basement seize-the-day Transcendental Emerson-wannabe ripoff period pieces feature such garbage humans? If every protagonist in this is not utterly ruined and destitute by the end, I'm going to abandon this before the last chapter and file it under did-not-finish.

I loathe every character in this book. Not very promising. I continue to read only due to the promise of witnessing their immeasurable suffering.
