There's a scene in the film "Come and See" w/ a lake of extremely heavy, thick mud that two lovebirds must walk/slog through. About halfway through this book I re-felt that agonizing quicksand effluvium of post-archaic mayhem. Good news is this be due to nothing more than the density of the text, and no horrors of translation or subject matter... a compulsively readable 1000-page masterpiece (taking intermezzo # 1)
