Gracie has left Daisy and Molly. She was tired of the trek and wanted to go to Wiluna, to her mother.

Quite the history lesson in the first chapters. Now, July 1930. Constable Riggs has come to take Molly, Gracie and Daisy to go to school at the Moore River Native Settlement. The writing is very matter-of-fact although the event and what is happening is very emotional. The grief and anguish of the family members and the rest of the native community are documented but it is very surreal.
