This quote from the Atlantic made me feel validated:

According to Oprah, Morrison's reply was "That, my dear, is called reading." Sorry, my dear Toni, but it's actually called bad writing. Great prose isn't always easy, but it's always lucid..."

M Yea. Now that I see it, I've often said that, but I know writers who disagree

K It would be interesting to hear their viewpoint. I know it's judgmental of me, but I can't help feeling that it's pretentious to feel that unclear, ambiguous sentences are somehow superior to lucid ones. Can't writing be both aesthetic and clear?
