Veres, Shel and Katissa find a renegade mage who had been causing trouble in town for weeks and who attacked Shel some hours before, chained up in a hidden chamber and looking as if he’d spent at least a week there – and while they are initially confused, they move from ‘What’d even going on here’ to ‘Ok, let’s get the criminal into prison’ way too quickly for someone as smart as the heroes I knew in previous book.

I liked the twist of having a hidden villain who was using Rimar’s name as a cover-up for his own evil scheme, but his eventual goal seemed too small-scale for such a grand plan. It would’ve been logical if he, say, wanted to kill Veres/Katissa/Ksandr for his own purposes and blame it on Rimar, but he was literally killing people just to get praise and recognition! The risk/reward ratio is just too screwed up there…

I’m upset that we don’t see much of Maren, as it would’ve been interesting to see how he coped with grief after the war’s aftermath. However, I’m really enjoying new characters of Ksandr and Katissa, especially Katissa’s matter-of-fact attitude and her banter with Shel. Plus, it’s so heartwarming to see how at ease Ksandr and Katissa around Shelena even though she’s a werewolf and as thus considered a ‘monster’!

So, someone is stealing food from magic school’s enchanted larders, local peasants claim that a dragon ate one of the villagers (and then apparently spitted him out), and a harpy somehow found its way into the very heart of the mages’ school. And that’s not to mention a rogue necromancer out for revenge at Veres! This is going to be such a turbulent and hilarious read.

I wish we’d seen more of Roim, Shelena and Veres’s son, since he is sent away once it’s revealed that an old enemy may be after Veres’s family. Considering that Shel became very much a hovering mom due to the death of her first child, and Veres, by contrast, is a very chill dad, I would've expected lots of hilarious and heartwarming interactions!

I have a new favourite in Shelena’s dog Red, except it’s not just any dog, but troll-bred dog – meaning it’s a huge monstrosity with manners of a troll that’s agile enough to casually leap over high fences, strong enough to knock a grown man down and bold enough to steal a meal from a full-grown dragon, yet Red is also sweet and playful like a puppy.

*High-pitched squealing* This novella is everything I needed because it shows the much-deserved happy ending for Veres and Shelena! They are not married, but they officially become a couple and raise their son together – even if Veres often has to leave for weeks at times as the mages still deal with the scattered remains of the renegades defeated in the 1st book. So, it’s kinda like a guest marriage, I think?
