A huge issue was formed when Emoni got her phone taken in school because this cuts off all communication from people who might need to contact her about her daughter. It turns out that her daughter was sick at daycare and had to be picked up. She ended up getting picked up by Tyrone's mom who then spoke about custody with Emoni. This proves how big of an issue it was to get her phone taken at school.

Emoni says "For the rest of our lives, God willing, We'll have a child." This made me realize that Emoni and Tyrone are going to have to deal with each other for the rest of their lives, which is something I never really thought about.

Emoni is constantly stressed about her classes, her child and other aspects of life. One of the only things that helps her cope is her friends. When she is talking to one of her best friends she says, "The laughter helps ease the weight on my chest."

Emoini wonders if getting a job after high school would be a better decision than going to college because she needs money for her child and she says she doesn't want to have her grandma take care of her child for her all the time. She says she wants to get a job at a restaurant so she can be "making money instead of spending it."

Emoni really wants to go to the class trip but when she is told that she needs $800 to go she is crushed. She says, "I want to go so bad , but I grab that hope between my fingers and crush it like strands of saffron." She is devastated that she needs so much money for the class trip. It would be almost impossible for her to make that money because of many reasons including her job, and her kid.

This book seems to get better and better as I continue to read and I am starting to learn more about Emoni's amazing cooking abilities as well as the struggles of her life, like how she is dealing with the absence of her father.

A good point I would bring up is how bad it would be to go to school pregnant and how much attention that would draw from students and teachers. Many people would probably think less of you for getting pregnant at such a young age.
