I'm surprised at the shear amount of MVA's (motor vehicle accidents)that Ivey has to respond to. Around here, we have two or three a week, but half of the author's call volume seems to consist of MVA's. It may be because she's in a rural area (more highways) and also because those are the main calls she likes to discuss, having the potential to be the most interesting.

The book is fantastic, but the title is misleading; the author is not in fact an EMT - she's a paramedic. The only reason it's called "EMT" is because when the book was written (late 80's), the EMS system where the book takes place (Virginia) didn't yet use the term "paramedic"; instead, they used "EMT Cardiac Technician" to signify the advanced level of training.

Dang, three consecutive calls on Mother's Day! I can sympathize with being that busy!

After a long weekend of squad calls, I feel sympathetic to Pat when she talks about post-call exhaustion and whatnot. I also find it interesting to hear about how she came to be an EMT and to compare it with my own experiences.

Great book so far. I can definitely sympathize with some of her emotions and experiences. I look forward to reading more of this both in class and on my own.
