I've finally figured out what makes science fiction so tedious. The authors are completely infatuated with their own "remarkable insight". So they end up beating the idea to death, rather than letting it unfold on its own.
That said, it is good to have someone what knows what he is talking about (even if it dates quickly) rather than "I kinna do it captin. De antimatter containment field is genna blow."
