While this isn't bad it definitely toes the line with boring for me. Half the problem is that there are loads of passive characters so it feels like the events of the Dust Bowl really drive the plot... So if you know anything about the history of the Dust Bowl you basically already know what's going to happen next and it feels very predictable.

So... This book has followed roughly the same formula as 'The Great Alone' where it starts off unique and interesting, gets a little predictable, then does a hard swerve into a completely different unforshadowed topic and a rushed romance to wrap things up. In this case after running out of ideas related to the dust bowl the story randomly became all about communism.
