However, maybe Billy Graham can help him. I think Louie is feeling enlightened and guilty after listening to the sermons. He realizes how awful he was to his wife. He is realizing that he doesn't want this to be his legacy: an abusive and paranoid alcoholic. Maybe religion will help him. I hope Louie changes for the better.

Louie is a different person, and it is extremely sad. He used to be so carefree. And it is such a shame that he can't run anymore. He now doesn't have something to pour his energy and rage into. Now all he has is alcoholism and the ghost of the Bird following him. Those veterans from the Pacific War really all were very messed up.

The Bird is truly awful. I really hate him. I don't understand how these men survived with miniscule portions and relentless beatings. How did they not sustain brain damage? Also, every time Louie says that the concentration camp he is at is the worst, the next one is even worse. I don't think things can get worse, but they do. Seriously, Japanese prisoners can't have been treated this badly.

I can't believe how brutal the Japanese were! I also can't believe that Louie and his friends survived against ALL ODDS. People back then were so tough. I also can't believe my reading speed! I just can't get enough of this amazing book! I am so excited to read a school book for once in my life!!
