Those ancient Islamic thinkers whom thou hast mentioned would never have dreamed that after so many centuries their thoughts, insted of being continued and developed, would only be repeated over and over again, as if they were ultimate and infallible truths. If there is to be any change for the better, thinking must be encouraged instead of the present thought imitation...

Oddly enough, the urge to wander that has mad me so restless for the greater prt of my life and lures me again and again into all manner of hazards and enoucnters, does not stem so much from a thirst for adventure as from a longing to find my own restful place in the world - to arrive at a point where I could correlte all the might hppen to me with all that I might think and feel and desire.

Perfect quote for my own life: "...the urge to wander that has made me so restless for the greater part of my life and lures me...into all manner of hazards and encounters...does not stem from a thirst for adventure as from a longing to find my restful place in the world...to arrive at a point where I could correlate all that might happen to me with all I might think...feel...desire"

Tim Yeah, I saw you had :) And 3 stars? What did you think?

Shaimaa Ali It was a very good book, however (not sure if it was related to the translation or the used font) the book was very big , more than 500 pages! It has lots of details and some of his life events i felt not organized. Also his relation with the Saudi king..hmmm don't know how to describe my feeling about .. I'm not from KSA, maybe he really intended good & prosperity for his country ..

You made me check my small notebook where i copy some of the quotes i like to keep. Strange enough i found them excellent, philosophical quotes ..strange that I had evaluated it like that !

Shaimaa Ali I reviewed my Arabic review ( in short it was disturbing with going back & forth in historical events that came not organized or chronology proven , i wish i could have rated higher than 3 stars!)

Btw, some of your writings reminds me of the writer himself: Muhammad Asad :-)

Tim He's using a certain, I guess, flashback style that reads ok in English, but I'm not sure how that translates to Arabic linguistically. Thank you for the comment, and you're right, I am completely identifying with his entire thought process and actions in his conversion process. I'm seeing a lot of good insight as well into one of my main frustrations with Islam, and that is the lack of intellectual emphasis in current interpretations of the tradition. It didn't start out like that, nor does this run consistent with the Qur'anic message. Thinking to better ourselves in life, thought and action has not just stopped, but it's actively discouraged by many movements and people as some sort of haram.

Shaimaa Ali I tend to agree with you. However when some recent writers start analyzing historical events or try to correct some of the prophet speeches or weaken them you find the restrict scholars condemning them (because they used logical thinking) & didn't take what was tought during the past years for granted ! They condemn them saying that are not Muslims even!!
I'm focusing recently on controvertial writers & found myself in lots of topics agreeing with them.....
