Nikolai Rostov has accused Telyanin of thievery, which Telyanin is guilty. But Nikolai is a newcomer to the regiment and Telyanin is an honored leader, if Telyanin is convicted the the whole regiment is dishonored for thievery. But if he is not convicted then the guilty walks free and Nikolai is embarrassed instead. Tolstoy's way of pointing out social injustice? and lose lose situations?
