Running in place at the speed of light, we defensively cling to our unexamined notion of categories. (...) they can strengthen stereotypes and murmur the false humilities of "common sense." Glowing with a veneer of studied connoisseurship, they can grow nostalgic over times that never were. They are easy systems. Use them but doubt them.
