I’m not going to be embarrassed about reading a children’s book. I loved Jacqueline Wilson’s books when I was a kid and watched all of the Tracy Beaker series when they came out, so had to watch the new show too. As I am now recovering from surgery, so needed something easy to read and to go back to my childhood.

‘I’ve gone past my sell-by date already. It gets hopeless when you get older than five or six. You’ve stopped being a cute little toddler and started to be difficult. And I’m not pretty either so people won’t take one look at my photo and start cooing. And then it’s not like I’m up for adoption so people can’t ever make me their little girl, not properly.’

‘Elaine’s got a whole library of files on me. I’ve had a secret rifle through them and you should just see some of the mean horrid things they say about me. I had a good mind to sue them for libel.’

That was one of the things I liked about these books as a kid, they made me feel like an adult by not shying from tough issues, as well as using words others wouldn’t, like ‘libel’.

Nadia Hope you're recovering ok Charlie. I went through a hard time last year and read nothing for 3 months, then felt like I could literally not read so I read a ton of YA to get back into it. I'm excited to read children's books "to my son" haha but also for myself you don't need to even consider feeling embarrassed! I used to love Tracey Beaker! Hope it makes you feel better!

Charlie Fenton Thank you! Slowly getting there, but I swear my concentration is terrible right now and feels like books like these are the only things I can read. I’m sorry to hear you went through a hard time and hope you are better now? And I’m so glad someone feels the same way! I think people need to be less judgemental about what others read, what age groups books are aimed at etc., as well as us trying to be less embarrassed about it (which is why I made this post). I had so many of Jacqueline Wilson’s books when I was younger, but will always love this one.
