There is a pounding on the door from the police. It is night and the girl is the only one awake. Her dad is in the cellar, hiding from the people taking all of the men from their families. The girl wakes her mom up and when they open the door, the police tell them to leave with them. They obey and the girl wakes her brother. The chapters switch years. Julia, Zoë, and Bertrad started moving to an apartment in 2002.

In 1942, the girl left her brother in their secret hiding place. The French police took her family to a place near her father's work. Her father soon joined them because he could not let his family go. When the girl found out they weren't going home, all she could think about was her brother in the closet. They had tried to get him but failed. In 2002, Julia is finding out what happened at the gathering in 1942.
