Sam is very thorough when speaking. He hits all of the details and acts in the same way when doing tasks. For example, when he talks about the kind of plants he eats while in the woods, he describes their fuzzy leaves and their slender stalks.

Suspense is the use of context to create anxiety or uncertainty. Jean Craighead George uses suspense throughout the book so you can feel empathy for Sam. When Sam steals food from a hunter, the outcome is suspended until it is known. Sam does not get caught.
