Crazy to see just how precisely the problems Biblical exegesis sought to solve foreshadowed a whole host of literary-critical methods and techniques. This study can cite patristic writers alongside 20th century theorists almost seamlessly.

Everything but the final subsection of the final chapter. The first 150 pages or so of this book were really good, but the last 200 have been almost nothing but examples. “Here is EVERY TIME a church father reads a verse as being for or against asceticism” is here basic move for most of the book. I have the first bit a fairly close read, but it’s been a hard skim ever since.
Often all I need to read for books outside my immediate area of interest is the intro and chapter intros. Not the kind of reading experience Goodreads is built for.
It’s very true. I’d have done that for this book except doe the fact that I need to write a review of it. It has been good though.
