the back story is a bunch of kids went missing that was at some kind of camp and there all gone except one, when the book starts there are some kids/ highschool students are planning the writing and distribution of the school paper because they were in charge of it. at the very beginning of the book vicki was super worried about her friend shelly bc she hadn't heard from her plus she wasn't religious
