Dantès has received very unfair treatment so far. The book shows how the jelausy of others can pose unimaginable perils on an innocent person. Later on, Dantès meets an old man in jail who makes his captivity more bearable, and even treats him like a son. I believe it shows how the smallest human interactions are able to keep someone sane, even in the harshest of times.
