After losing his ship and being stuck in Antarctica without any news from the outside world since late 1914, Shackleton finally arrives completely exhausted at the Norwegian whaling station in South Georgia in May 1916.

His first sentence when he meets Mr. Sorlle, the station's manager:

“Tell me, when was the war over?”

“The war is not over. Millions are being killed. Europe is mad. The world is mad.”
