What a book to lead into Presidents‘ Day! Such a great read by a man who shows how he cared for those around him, as well as the country he sought to lead. Obama begins by exploring his roots and how he grew up with a love of America, no matter where he was living. He had his moments and strove to make something of himself, scholastically and with those around him. When he chose a political path, he sought change.

Obama’s successes in forging new relationship on the international scene were not always matched at home. While he had a relatively easy time getting his first SCOTUS nominee on the Court, his passion for reforming healthcare proved painful and a war he felt must be waged. The memoir goes into detail about the struggle and the passion Obama showed for a healthcare system that permitted all a chance to bite the apple!

Winning the 2008 election was the easy part for Obama, or so it seems in the midst of this memoir. Inheriting the financial crisis and lucrative bailouts of some of the large American corporations turned out to be an early headache for the Obama Administration, even before it formally took office. However, fighting against what appeared to be a stubborn GOP leadership base in Congress, stimulus was passed to help.

Obama effectively explores the height of the campaign for the presidency that was stymied by the mortgage crisis. While McCain sought to stop the campaign, Obama wanted to help, but not stop things as they gained momentum. By Election Day, Obama was ready to take over the reins of power and make history. His election opened minds and kept America on the edge of change, but there were though who doubted it mattered.

Looking ahead to higher office, the Obamas had to discuss their options, which included the ultimate sacrifice to their family and privacy. While Michelle was vocally against it, she could see the spark in Barack's eye and did not stand in his way. A thorough exploration of the campaign for the Democratic nomination and the campaign takes up this portion of the book, offering the reader great insight into the race.
