"Don't cheerful agnostics, who know they're going to die dead, worry much less than good Baptists, who worry lest their sons and cousins and sweethearts fail to get into the Baptist heaven- or what is even worse, who wonder if they may not have guessed wrong- if God may not be a Catholic, maybe, or a Mormon or a Seventh-day Adventist instead of a Baptist, and then they'll go to hell themselves! Consolation? No!"

"They laughed intimately, and in the stress of their merriment he picked up her hand squeezed it, rubbed it against his arm. He did not release it, but it was only with the friendliest and least emphatic pressure that he held it.."

Josh I really want to read this book. I've checked it out from the library in the past, but never got around to reading it.

Laur you probably already know how much i love (love, love) sinclair lewis but i haven't read elmer gantry in at least 6 years. someone recommended it and i've just fallen in sideways, like i always do with his books.

it would be worth your time to read, especially considering our recent conversation about atheism etc. i'd lend you my copy if it weren't the least convenient way for you to get your hands on one :)

Josh I checked it out from the library again, and found the audiobook on audible, so I should be able to read it here very soon.. Once I finish my commitment to Infinite Jest. I can't remember what I was reading before, but Elmer Gentry did come up in an essay about atheism that I read in the last couple years, which is why I had heard of it in the first place.
