In the first few chapters, Mrs. Showalter draws you into her story with a beautifully descriptive narrative outlining the histories of both her father's and her mother's families. The detail she puts into her writing gives the reader a very real sense of getting to know these families, and lends a good basis for getting to know young Shirley. Her love for her parents comes through loudly and clearly in every word.
