A thick layer of cloud rests atop the eastern horizon, and the sky pales, the deep orange glow of an ember breathed into life.

I pull him to me, reveling in the feel of his lush mouth as I steal the words from his lips. I run my hands over the hard planes of his shoulders, his arms—it isn’t enough. I want more of him, all of him.

“You are lucky enough to love someone who loves you back. He is alive and breathing and in the same vicinity as you. By the skies, do something about it. For however long you have. For whatever time you get. Because if you don’t, I swear that you’ll regret it. You’ll regret it for all your years.”

Perhaps death will find me too, down here in the dark veins of a city that I should have saved.
But no. I cannot die. Too much is at stake.

“You need a pet, Elias,” I say, “if you are turning to rocks for company.”

“It’ll be Fari Harbor,” I say. “Where we disembarked when we first got here. But we have to get through half the city first. And if the streets are crawling with soldiers—”
The Shrike offers a grim smile. “Streets are for amateurs, Laia of Serra. We’ll take the rooftops.”
