Steven Perry The writers who inspired him are of much better quality and far less troubling, like Edgar Allan Poe, Lord Dunsany, or Algernon Blackwood.

Steven Perry Also if you're into manga and want a weird fiction fix, I'd highly recommend Junji Itou, specifically 'Uzumaki.' There are a lot of authors who do Lovecraftian better than Lovecraft did, and don't have the same baggage as him. I've read a couple of biographies about him and he had quite a lot of personal issues (apart from the obvious).

Alyssa Joy I love Junji Ito!! I'm actually reading this collection out of more of a hate analysis than enjoyment, but thank you for the suggestions!!

Steven Perry No problem! Supernatural horror of the late nineteenth / early twentieth century is my guilty pleasure genre of choice. I don't know how Lovecraft became the face of the genre, but for many people he's both the gateway into it, and the reason to not step one foot any further into the field. I'm always worried he's going to scare interested parties away. He's the massive skeleton in the horror closet and every year his bones get more disgusting.
