I've had this on my book list forever!! Did you try listening on Audible, or have a hardback copy? One thing I have been playing around with when I can't get into a book is switching formats (if I really want to read it!), so maybe I will try the opposite that you tried when I decide to give it a go. It's such a brilliant concept...but I've done the same thing with so many "great" books! So much is timing in our lives...books are so magic.
