4.This character reminds me of somebody I know because
Deja reminds me of my cousin because she of how strong they both are in terrible situations that they wish they weren't in. My cousin lost her brother and is doing amazing at dealing with it. She has kept up with her school work and hasn't ever given up. Deja is in a situation where she is struggling too but they both always kept going no matter how hard it got.

45.My favorite part of the book..
My favorite part of the book was the end when Deja finally got her happy ending. The amount her life changed from the beginning of the book to the end is crazy. It would be hard for me to even imagine living in her position at the beginning of the book and I don't know how she got through it. But in the end, she finally got what she deserved, and her family was working together.

43.This story teaches...
This story teaches that things can always get better, no matter how hard it is at the moment. Deja's home life was awful, and she deserved so much better. She never gave up and always kept her head up. She helped out her parents, and in the end, she got the ending that she deserved.

25.I began to think of...
I began to think of what will happen once Deja is old enough to move out. Will her parents and siblings still be living in the same place? Will her siblings know how to live through it the way that Deja did if they are still in the same situation? Their family is only getting by right now because of Deja's mother and Deja's help. Once Deja is gone, will they still be doing okay?

26. I love the way...
I love the way that Deja takes care of her siblings and acts as a role model for them. Their parents are struggling to give them the life they deserve, and she has been a huge help to them this whole time. She always set a good example for her siblings. Her overall kindness is overwhelming, especially since she is so young.

34.I like the way the author...
I like the way the author portrays Deja. She shows her struggles and all the things she deals with growing up but also shows how the struggles have made her extremely responsible and mature. She is forced to take on responsibilities that no other kid her age has. Deja is inspiring, and although there are setbacks along the way, she is doing a great job, considering the circumstances.

23.Something I learned from my reading...
Something I have learned from my reading is that you never know what people can be dealing with at home, and something as simple as being nice can go a long way. Deja was struggling at home and in her personal life, and the people at school that were kind to her regardless of her situation meant so much to her, and she was so grateful to have them in her life.

19.My opinion of (name of character) is...
My opinion of Deja is that I admire how responsible and mature she has grown to be at a very young age. Her living and family situation has caused a lot of pain and responsibility in her life. She is handling the situation as best as she can, and if I were her, I know I would probably not be doing as great as she is. I like that she doesn't try to hide who she is.

7.I think this setting is important because
I think this setting is important because it takes place in Brooklyn, New York, 15 years after the 9/11 terrorist attack. Deja was able to see where the towers once stood, after only learning what happened on 9/11 recently, and a lot of time after the rest of her classmates. This shows that her living situation caused her to be less aware of things happening in the world.

17.I wish _______________ had happened...
I wish Deja's siblings had been older, so she wasn't going through everything all alone. Having siblings is proven to help kids going through tough times, but I feel like if they were older, she would have been able to talk to them more about what was happening in their lives, and they could have helped her more with everything she had to do.

76. What type of reader would enjoy this book and why?
A reader that likes learning about historical events and how they affect people's lives would like this book. It is not challenging to read, so someone at a lower reading level would like it. It is realistic fiction about a girl learning about 9/11, and the story shows how she was impacted by the event, even though it occurred before she was born.
