Notes:
(1) Peeta: "What about Gale?"
Katniss: "He's not a bad kisser either."
Peeta: "And it was okay with both of us? You kissing the other?"
Katniss: "No ... But I wasn't asking your permission."
- Wow! Just horrible!
(2) "We may have been the smallest, poorest district in Panem, but we know how to dance."
- Huh? We never did see District 12 get down and boogie very much.

Jayson’s Previous Updates

Notes:
(1) I'll take a bit of a break after this. I've been doing daily audiobook updates for two years and, frankly, I don't drive much because of lockdown, which was my main listening time.
(2) As for what's next, I have options. I could do a run of Neil Gaiman books (Neverwhere, Stardust, Coraline) or the James Bond novels. There's no natural successor like there's been.

Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3)

Jayson
Jayson is 96% done

Notes:
(1) More executioners should wear eyeliner.
(2) Great! As if the book wasn't grim enough, we get a whole chapter about suicide, night terrors, drug withdrawal and trauma.
(3) "Flame envelops the rose and devours it. Fire beats roses again."
- One last fire metaphor.
(4) "I have to remind myself that Gale's in 2 ... probably kissing another pair of lips."
- Seriously?

Jayson
Jayson is 94% done

Notes:
(1) "I dump the pitcher of water in his face. [Haymitch] comes to with a gasp, slashing blindly with his knife."
- A nice callback to the start of the second book. Haymitch will always be Haymitch, war or not. He's the one constant.
(2) "Nothing has changed. Nothing will ever change now."
- And thus, we have the thesis statement for this book. How utterly nihilistic.

Jayson
Jayson is 91% done

Notes:
(1) "I am on fire. The balls of flame that erupted from the parachutes shot over the barricades, through the snowy air."
- Enough with the fire metaphors! No, my mistake, she's actually on fire.
(2) Snow: "I wasn't watching Coin. I was watching you, Mockingjay. And you were watching me."
- Isn't that a line from ABBA? No, my mistake, that's "Knowing Me, Knowing You."

Notes:
(1) "The main thing I absorb is that fur underwear is a valuable trading item at the moment. Especially for people who left their homes underdressed."
- When it comes down to it, people will protect their loins at all costs.
(2) I've reached the point where THE death happens. You know, THE death that changes the entire series and renders it expressly nihilistic. Ugh!

Notes:
(1) "I'm running on hate. When the energy for that ebbs, I'll be worthless."
- I feel the same way when I'm out of coffee.
(2) "We hastily help one another apply thick layers of makeup, pull on wigs and sunglasses."
- Sounds like a slumber party.
(3) "The fire inside me has flickered out, and with it my strength."
- Okay, Girl on Fire. Enough with the fire metaphors.

Notes:
(1) "It's a long shot, it's suicide maybe, but I do the only thing I can think of. I lean in and kiss Peeta full on the mouth. His whole body starts shuddering, but I keep my lips pressed to his until I have to come up for air."
- The "only thing" she can think of? Apparently, kissing's her default solution in any emergency.
(2) Of all people, why's Gale still alive?

Notes:
(1) Peeta: "You're still trying to protect me. Real or not real."
Katniss: "Real ... Because that's what you and I do. Protect each other."
- Well, except those times those two tried to kill each other.
(2) "I think [Snow] might have recently had more work done ... his prep team really needs to use a lighter hand with his blush."
- Katniss Everdeen, cosmetics expert.

Notes:
(1) "A painted window shatters, revealing the ugly world behind it. Laughter changes to screams, blood stains pastel stones."
- That's some real teen angst poetry there. Katniss' totally emo.
(2) "I sprint across the intersections, holding up a hand for the others to wait while I look for trouble."
- If there's something Katniss is great at, it's looking for trouble.

Notes:
(1) "Squad 451 and the television crew collect dinner from the canteen and gather in a tense circle to eat. At first I think that Peeta is the cause of the unease, but by the end of the meal, I realize more than a few unfriendly looks have been directed my way."
- Even compromised and dangerous, everyone still enjoys Peeta's company over Katniss... well, except Gale.

Sasha lol your updates are hilarious!
wow Katniss doesn't even feel bad admitting it

Thanks, glad you're enjoying them! Yes, Katniss doesn't empathize well with others. Frankly, I have no idea why Peeta and Gale put up with her. She's two-timing them to their faces, and being real unrepentant about it. There's got to be less problematic girls in the world to kiss.

Layla Aww, I love the wedding scene. Finnick and Annie are so sweet together!

And wow....Katniss really feels no shame admitting that to Peeta. yikes.

Jayson Layla wrote: "Aww, I love the wedding scene. Finnick and Annie are so sweet together!

Yes, Finnick and Annie might be the best couple in the series. And, yes, yikes indeed :)

The Bibliophile Doctor Hence proved, love is blind 😂

The Bibliophile Doctor I'm wondering now is Katniss supposed to be a likeable character or not??

Jayson WeasleyNewtValdezDiAngelo wrote: "I guess Katniss can't hear herself over all the 'girl on fire' and 'mocking jay'. I mean, Peeta isn't deaf! He can hear what Katniss says to him! Heartless!"

Yep, heartless... at least where kissing's involved.

Jayson The Bibliophile Doctor wrote: "I'm wondering now is Katniss supposed to be a likeable character or not??"

Well, she's only succeeding at one of those, but I guess it depends on the intention :)

Taurus Reader (bigpileofbooks) I didn't realize there are those lines while reading this book 8 years ago😂 what a shame, Katniss😤

Jayson Ferlina wrote: "I didn't realize there are those lines while reading this book 8 years ago😂 what a shame, Katniss😤"

Once you realize that the whole series revolves around kissing, these sort of lines really pop and stand out 😁👍

dyketatorship People are dying? Everyone's rioting? The established government of 75 years is in the process of being overthrown? Who cares about all that? WHERE IS MY DANCING?!!?!

andrea hartmann Looking back, Katniss was kind of an asshole.

Jayson Hazel (WE WILL MISS YOU SADIE, YOU WERE THE BEST!) wrote: "Katniss is just so full of herself XD."

Power is getting to her head. You don't just dub someone a savior of an entire nation and expect them not to have a messiah complex. 🤷‍♂️

Well, she is boasting about dancing skills, I assume it must have been somewhat prevalent. 🤷‍♂️

Jayson andrea wrote: "Looking back, Katniss was kind of an asshole."

Yes, particularly in this book. In the past she was too much of an underdog to be an asshole. Though, if you as their cat, he probably wouldn't hesitate to agree. 🤷‍♂️

Yesss. I feel like Buttercup is such an underrated, mistreated character in that story. Like seriously, someone should call the RSPCA on Katniss.

The amount of times she threatened to kill or eat that poor cat... just criminal.

right? it's like there's no other girl left! just because she's the protagonist doesn't mean everyone will just love her relentlessly no matter what she does

Jayson Sakshi wrote: "right? it's like there's no other girl left! just because she's the protagonist doesn't mean everyone will just love her relentlessly no matter what she does"

Yet, it seems different rules apply when you're dealing with YA novels. In YA fiction, the female protagonist is automatically the object of everyone's obsession. That's like the first rule of YA. 😉

Seriously, all the female protagonists have the same blueprint; white, thin, cis-het able, mostly(not always) blonde and blue-eyed Mary Sues with chronic Snowflake Syndrome™ and everyone loves them. Are all these authors secretly being mind-controlled?

It sells, it's what people want to read, so they'll keep doing it until it doesn't anymore. It's that simple.

Oh well not just female, even male MC too. Not here in hunger games, it's all about Katniss but in romance novels it feels whole world is behind male MC n female MC Coz they are so hot and sexy. Droolworthy ... ughhhh.

Jayson The Bibliophile Doctor wrote: "Oh well not just female, even male MC too. Not here in hunger games, it's all about Katniss but in romance novels it feels whole world is behind male MC n female MC Coz they are so hot and sexy. Droolworthy ... ughhhh."

From my limited experience with romance novels, I concur. Well, it's a formula for a reason. The reason it's done so often is because people eat it up. The moment it stops being the norm is the moment when it stops being reliably profitable. 🤷‍♂️

Sasha yeah it's not realistic but it sells.

Jayson Sakshi wrote: "yeah it's not realistic but it sells."

All successful sci-fi/fantasy is. 🤷‍♂️

Ahhh it is yes but it feels so unrealistic and repetitively annoying . They all use same formula 🙄😑

Apparently people like unrealistic and repetitively annoying. If it sells, it sells. To use an analogy, McDonalds doesn't make the best hamburger, but they sell the most hamburgers. 🤷‍♂️
