A character in this book is Ivan he is a silver back gorilla and has been in captivity for 27 years. He is self reliant, intelligent, and creative. He is self reliant because he was alone for awhile, so he is hesitant to fit in with the other animals in his new display . He is intelligent because he learns to communicate with the animals. Finally, Ivan is creative, he paints pictures and most gorillas don't do that.
