(1) Gale: "What's going on in your head?"
Katniss: "I don't know."
Gale: "Then it's like kissing someone who's drunk. It doesn't count."
- What? Ask Peeta if kissing a drunk girl still counts as kissing.
(2) Katniss: "So, you never kissed any other girls?"
Gale: "I didn't say that ..."
Katniss: "Who did you kiss? And where?"
- Well, if it isn't Little Miss Hypocrisy.

Notes:
(1) I'll take a bit of a break after this. I've been doing daily audiobook updates for two years and, frankly, I don't drive much because of lockdown, which was my main listening time.
(2) As for what's next, I have options. I could do a run of Neil Gaiman books (Neverwhere, Stardust, Coraline) or the James Bond novels. There's no natural successor like there's been.

Notes:
(1) More executioners should wear eyeliner.
(2) Great! As if the book wasn't grim enough, we get a whole chapter about suicide, night terrors, drug withdrawal and trauma.
(3) "Flame envelops the rose and devours it. Fire beats roses again."
- One last fire metaphor.
(4) "I have to remind myself that Gale's in 2 ... probably kissing another pair of lips."
- Seriously?

Notes:
(1) "I dump the pitcher of water in his face. [Haymitch] comes to with a gasp, slashing blindly with his knife."
- A nice callback to the start of the second book. Haymitch will always be Haymitch, war or not. He's the one constant.
(2) "Nothing has changed. Nothing will ever change now."
- And thus, we have the thesis statement for this book. How utterly nihilistic.

Notes:
(1) "I am on fire. The balls of flame that erupted from the parachutes shot over the barricades, through the snowy air."
- Enough with the fire metaphors! No, my mistake, she's actually on fire.
(2) Snow: "I wasn't watching Coin. I was watching you, Mockingjay. And you were watching me."
- Isn't that a line from ABBA? No, my mistake, that's "Knowing Me, Knowing You."

(1) "The main thing I absorb is that fur underwear is a valuable trading item at the moment. Especially for people who left their homes underdressed."
- When it comes down to it, people will protect their loins at all costs.
(2) I've reached the point where THE death happens. You know, THE death that changes the entire series and renders it expressly nihilistic. Ugh!

- I feel the same way when I'm out of coffee.
(2) "We hastily help one another apply thick layers of makeup, pull on wigs and sunglasses."
- Sounds like a slumber party.
(3) "The fire inside me has flickered out, and with it my strength."
- Okay, Girl on Fire. Enough with the fire metaphors.

- The "only thing" she can think of? Apparently, kissing's her default solution in any emergency.

Katniss: "Real ... Because that's what you and I do. Protect each other."
- Well, except those times those two tried to kill each other.
(2) "I think [Snow] might have recently had more work done ... his prep team really needs to use a lighter hand with his blush."

- That's some real teen angst poetry there. Katniss' totally emo.
(2) "I sprint across the intersections, holding up a hand for the others to wait while I look for trouble."
- If there's something Katniss is great at, it's looking for trouble.

- Even compromised and dangerous, everyone still enjoys Peeta's company over Katniss... well, except Gale.

Sasha lol Gale's just making excuses to get more kisses

Jayson Sakshi wrote: "lol Gale's just making excuses to get more kisses"

Frankly, so is Katniss.

Lilah LMAO I remember how that second quote REALLY pissed me off when I read that book back in high school. Like it's okay for her to be a two timing ho, but when Gale (who I hate anyway but whatever) is implying that he kissed other girl(s) *in the past*, she enters a bitchfit? The hypocricy is giving me a terrible headache 🤦‍♀️

TMR What is it with these people and kissing? 😂😂

Yeah, Katniss is sort of narcotic too. Certain rules must apply to everyone else but her. And the worst thing is that people do nothing to push back on that. Everyone in District 13 seems to know the details of her love triangle, but I guess no one cares to tell her that's not how normal people behave. I guess because she's the Mockingjay, they'll let her do whatever she wants so long as they get what they need out of her.

Jayson TMR wrote: "What is it with these people and kissing? 😂😂"

Who knows. In the dystopian future, I guess people are all about kissing. 🤷‍♂️

You can still comment on them if you like. I'll happily comment back and discuss :)

Sana I mean, I really, really, REALLY love these books, but damn, everytime I see an update of you, I can't help but laugh about the amount and meaning of kisses in these books XDDD

Virginia Ronan ♥ Herondale ♥ And here I thought we were already done with the Gale moments. *shakes head*

Shh... One More Chapter I loved these books when I first read them. But looking back all these types of books had a heroine who only wanted one guy but wanted to keep the other on the hook. Pretty annoying as an adult.

Jayson Sana wrote: "I mean, I really, really, REALLY love these books, but damn, everytime I see an update of you, I can't help but laugh about the amount and meaning of kisses in these books XDDD"

Haha! It only takes the suggestion of it to realize these books are all about kissing. It's one of those things that once you see it you can't un-see it :)

Jayson Virginia Ronan wrote: "And here I thought we were already done with the Gale moments. *shakes head*"

We've only just begun the second film. There's surely more to come.

Layla Not Katniss getting jealous when she's litterly messing with both Gale and Peeta at the same time....I think she needs to to have a serious self evaluation.

Yes! I've been saying this for years. It's annoying in books, but I've known several girls in real life who do essentially the same thing, where they have a boyfriend they're on the fence about, but keep them around while they look for someone better. It's like they can't be single for even a split-second, they have to have a backup or placeholder. Perhaps I'm just naiive and this is a common attitude. 🤷‍♂️ I don't know how prevalent that is, but I've seen it enough to know it's a thing. Same thing here, Katniss is keeping Gale on the backburner in case things with Peeta don't work out.

I tell you, she expects others to play by rules she has no intention to stick to herself. I don't know what it is about a lot of these YA books where heroines think they're SO special, or why everyone treats them that way and just goes along with it. 🙄

Queen V™ This is my first time reading Mockingjay.
And Katniss is so confusing.
One moment she saying how much she cares and misses Peeta.
And the next she's kissing Gale.

Jayson Veronica Rose wrote: "This is my first time reading Mockingjay.

Yes, she's definitely inconsistent in this one. It's one of the reasons why people dislike this book so much compared with the other two.

Alexandra Elend Wolf They both are just... so much. Like, been confused is not the same as having your inhibitions lowered, Gale.

And Katniss really needs to stop that whole thing she's doing with Gale.

I just can't with these two. Katniss is totally eroding all the good will she's built with me over the first two books. I never liked Gale, but he's acting especially dirtbag here.

Then she goes and kisses Peeta

Ugh. I don't miss being single or super young. But authors should stop perpetuating that this is a good idea. Just like uber toxic relationships touted as these amazing love stories.

To be fair, she hasn't kissed Peeta yet this book (view spoiler).

Yes, but I know she does later, and I remember how it ended. So I'm still calling her out. And I know she still has hopes for him to come back. I don't get what she is thinking while doing all this

Jayson Shh... wrote: "Ugh. I don't miss being single or super young. But authors should stop perpetuating that this is a good idea. Just like uber toxic relationships touted as these amazing love stories."

Yeah, I'm concerned for this younger generation. Trying to normalize two-timing is one of the most insidious things I've come across in books.

You're not alone. I don't think most people have a clue what's going through her head.

Indeed. Your other posts about Katniss have actually made me think that I was remembering her character wrongly but... nope, this reminds me why she exasperated me.

At this point, I don't even have an opinion about Gale because I can barely remember anything about him BUT your updates are not helping his case XD

The Bibliophile Doctor I just read all the updates and I almost fell off my bed while laughing. Your updates are harmful for my head 😂 literally.

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "Indeed. Your other posts about Katniss have actually made me think that I was remembering her character wrongly but... nope, this reminds me why she exasperated me."

Yes, this is definitely not the Katniss of old. It's what happens to her when you add Gale to the mix. He just brings out the worst in her, or rather they bring out the worst in each other.

Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "At this point, I don't even have an opinion about Gale because I can barely remember anything about him BUT your updates are not helping his case XD"

Lol. I'm biased, I'll admit, but I'm basing every bit of my bias on facts. Nobody makes a worse case for Gale than the words right out of Gale's own mouth :)

Jayson The Bibliophile Doctor wrote: "I just read all the updates and I almost fell off my bed while laughing. Your updates are harmful for my head 😂 literally."

Thanks! Lol. I'll take that as a compliment 😁👍

I supposed that is true... though I think she exasperated me through this whole book a lot it may have intensified when Gale was around.

Gale is his own worst enemy, if only he realized that. Oh, wait! He still needs to be even denser.

Jayson Hazel (WE WILL MISS YOU SADIE, YOU WERE THE BEST!) wrote: "Wait you make gifs? How do you do that? Maybe it is a commonly known thing, but I have never known how"

Well, first you need video clips, which you either download from YouTube or something (there are many different methods) or clip out of the entire video using some software. Then you can either use a program like Photoshop to make the gif from the clip or an online gif maker. For example, I use ezgif.com.

Well, Gale certainly doesn't make things better. Things only get worse when Gale's around :)
