I'm normally an uncritical fan of David Leavitt's novels however this novel is so full of howlers I can only assume that he has deliberately left them in to irritate and bewildered native British English speakers.
Given the lead character is supposed to be a learned don he makes a fist over dating the Battle of Hastings to 1064 when every schoolboy in the land knows King Harald died in 1066.
