I also want to thank my writer friends on GR for adding so much to the site -- and to my life. They participate first and foremost as readers, share their experiences reading, and write reviews that help to keep my own TBR shelves filled. They are exemplary GR members, who show the kind of community that GR could be without draconian policies and knee-jerk implementation.

What policies? When were they implemented?

There's a huge thread on the Feedback group in which, on Friday afternoon, GR announced that they had already started to delete reviews "about the author, not the book" and shelves with names that suggested a focus on author behavior. (And they did this in time for Banned Book Week.) It's actually hit the national media -- The Washington Post had a piece on it, for example. It's a bad policy because where do you draw the line between discussing the author and reviewing a book? There's a lack of clarity about this. The original Feedback forum post states that reviews should be about the book -- which also seems to suggest that more creative approaches to writing could later be viewed as against the policy. And all the fears about Amazon's reviewing rules and practices being adopted at GR roared back into life again with this post. (Plus its timing, coming after Amazon announced a new Kindle that comes loaded with a GR app, didn't make people feel much better.)
And GR really messed up in the implementation by starting to delete content with no warning at all. They posted later that 21 people were affected by this, and apologized, but there's no getting that content back. They are now sending notifications with 48 hours notice before deleting reviews or shelves.
Richard Derus has been posting some good updates with links to some of the articles and blog posts on the controversy. And if you google Goodreads and Censorship, see what comes up. You can also check the original thread in the Feedback forum, which is here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

I agree, it's the readers and wonderful writers such as Brian Dice, J.S. Bailey, and countless others that make GR the awesome place that it is.:) Very nicely said, Kris!
