Found this with a big discount at Target and, exhausted by the pandemic and with time to fill up for a few weeks, I decided to go for it ... in the hopes that it’d be at least engrossing the way her earlier books used to be. Thus far: no such luck. It’s actually a ridiculous book in the sense that there’s very little novelistic flair: it goes on and on and on about Egypt this and that as if it were a textbook!

Ellen Yes, it's very research heavy in the beginning. It gets a little less so as it goes on, but (while I think it's cool and can relate) it felt like the author should have done more editing down. Just because it's cool knowledge doesn't mean it necessarily belongs in the narrative where it is!


Maia Yes, I usually love novels that have research but this is too much, it interrupts the narrative to the point where it just doesn’t feel like a novel half the time
