Maybe this is simply a function of Sullivan's tendency to belabor a point with excessive redundant details. But these women who really, really, don't want to get married and are truly, truly happy come across as protesting too much. I actually believe a woman can be happy unmarried. I don't need to be convinced. The endless protestations to that effect are counterproductive and getting on my nerves.

Here we go again. Of course, Sullivan can't just tell me her character is fascinated by the Lindbergh story. She has to give me every detail of the kidnapping. Sigh. I have a feeling I'm not going to end up finishing this.

The J. Courtney Sullivan school of writing: why give just one detail when you can give five? When citing a document on hippies, don't just choose the most telling line -- write out the whole thing! When talking about how a character feels about her engagement ring, don't just describe one detail -- describe the whole thing! When -- oh, God, I'm doing it too.

I forgot how tedious J. Courtney Sullivan can be, at least on audio. This book seems so overwritten.
