You know you're getting old when the fascinations of your early intellectual life are now the subject of historical inquiry, even while you sit there and say "Wait a second, I still haven't figured this stuff out."

Mostly making the case that America became hyper individualized in its economic and intellectual discourse during this period. I'm not sure this is a new insight, but intelligently stated.

For Rodgers the last quarter of the 20th century consolidated a shift in thinking about the nature of what it meant to be an American, even human. Previous public rhetoric focused on freedom as something achieved and maintained within a collective national purpose, by century's end, on both the right and the left, freedom was deeply individualized, a given that was threatened by collective purpose or definition.
