Hand in hand we ran through the Autumn forest;
Our laughter soaring on the wings of the mad wind;
In and out, tracing a fantastic path,
Through the passionate, flaming dogwood
Our limbs flashing white against the riotous background.
And, as we ran, you shouted snatches of wild songs—
Pagan hymns of praise to the dead gods.
On we rushed, dizzy with the strong wine of Autumn. . .
I wonder if you were married, too.

Lady, pretty lady, bright your eyes and blue,
Who could be a-counting all the hearts they broke?
Not a man you meet that doesn't fall for you;
Lady, pretty lady, how I hope you choke!

No matter where my route may lie,
No matter whither I repair,
In brief—no matter how or why
or when I go, the boys are there.
On lane and byway, street and square,
On alley, path and avenue,
They seem to spring up everywhere—
The men I am not married to.
